Family of Alexander BOYLE (1) & Ruth HOPKINS
2. Ross BOYLE. Born on Mar 15, 1826 in Allegheny City, PA. Ross died on Jan 24, 1911; he was 84. Occupation: Blacksmith, Miner, Farmer.

At 17, learned the trade of a blacksmith, which he continued until he went to California in 1853.
Spent two and half years there, successful at mining.
1856, returned to Penn, and purchased a farm. Sold farm in 1859 and moved to Ogle County, IL.
Purchased land in Dement Township.
1864, went to Oregan and Idaho on a prospecting tour. Was absent for about two and half years, engaged in mining and following the trade of a blacksmith.
Returned home in the fall of 1866, and settled on his farm. Owned 351 acres of land, located on sections 28, 29, and 31 of Dement Township.

Held the office of Road Commissioner two terms.
School Director for 15 years.
Elected Justice of the Peace, but did not qualify.

Member of the Presbyterian Church.
Voted with the Republican Party.

On Mar 23, 1848 when Ross was 22, he married Margaret GARVIN, daughter of James GARVIN & Nancy WILSON, in Butler County, PA. Born on Jan 1, 1827 in Butler County, PA. Margaret died on Dec 1, 1899; she was 72.

3. Alexander H. BOYLE II. Born on Dec 25, 1823 in Butler County, PA. Alexander H. died 1906/10; he was 82. Occupation: Farmer.

Attended public school.
Taught school one term.
Started farming by renting land. Leased part of the old homestead, erected a residence, purchased 50 ajoining acres, and subsequently purchased the homestead. Resided there, farming, until 1863.

1864, disposed of farm in Penn, and relocated to Dement Township, IL. Purchased 400 acres, known as the “Britton farm.” Resided there for 18 years.

Moved and retired, to Rochelle city, and purchased two resdiences, one of which he rented out.

Voted with the Republican Party.
Held the office of Road Commissioner.
Member of the Presbyterian Church.

On Aug 22, 1844 when Alexander H. was 20, he married Charlotte COLEMAN, daughter of William COLEMAN & Margaret COPPER.

4. James BOYLE Sr. Born on Mar 23, 1828 in Allegheny County, PA. James died in 1907; he was 78.

At an early age, family moved to Butler County, PA.
Went to California in 1852 with “gold fever.” Devoted his attention to placer mining for three years, returning east in 1855 to the family homestead.

Came to Ogle County in 1856, where he bought a farm of about 200 acres on section 32, Dement Township. Expanded it to 320 acres, and it was considered one of the most attractive and well situated homesteads in the county.

Member of the Presbyterian Church.
Proudly voted Republican since the first organization of the party.

On Feb 12, 1861 when James was 32, he married Sarah B. MARSHALL, daughter of Samuel MARSHALL & Mary GILLILAND, in Butler County, PA. Born in Butler County, PA.

They had the following children:

5. William BOYLE. Born in 1830. William died in 1841; he was 11.

6. David BOYLE. Born on May 27, 1832 in Butler County, PA. David died in 1915; he was 82.

Lived in Butler County until the age of 17.
Apprenticed at the wagon and carriage maker business, then worked as a ship carpenter for two seasons.
In 1853, went to California where he engaged in mining, mill-wrighting, and carpentering.
Returned to Butler County, and then one year later moved to Ogle County.

Came to Ogle County in 1861, and purchased 80 acres on section 31, Dement Township. Expanded to 240 acres.

On Mar 15, 1860 when David was 27, he first married Esther MARSHALL, daughter of Judge Samuel MARSHALL, in Butler County, PA. Born in Jun 1832 in Butler County, PA. Esther died on Aug 19, 1865; she was 33.

On Mar 22, 1877 when David was 44, he second married Martha BALDRIDGE / BELDRIDGE, daughter of Samuel BALDRIDGE / BELDRIDGE & Emily. Born on May 26, 1843 in Niagara County, NY.
